What was scheduled as a well-organised political rally by the All Progressives Congress (APC), Ijesa South Federal Constituency, in support of the party’s governorship candidate, Asiwaju Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji (AMBO), ahead of the August 15 Osun State governorship election, on Tuesday turned into a mourning protest following the reported killing of three APC members.
The rally, organised by the APC Ijesa South Campaign Council, was reportedly disrupted by the incident at Igbogi area of Ilesa West Local Government Area earlier in the morning.
APC supporters alleged that the victims were killed by suspected members of the Accord Party.
The development cast a sombre mood over the planned political gathering as party supporters instead embarked on a protest march to express their grief, condemn the reported killings and demand justice.
The procession commenced at Oke-Omiru and passed through Isokun, Itakogun, Ijoka, Ijamo and Okesa before proceeding to Ereja Roundabout and the Obokungbusi Hall of Fame at the Palace Square.
At the palace, the protesters interacted with the palace chiefs, presenting their concerns over the reported killings and the prevailing security situation ahead of the governorship election.
The interaction was followed by a prayer session at the Ereja Roundabout, during which prayers were offered for the repose of the souls of the deceased, for peace and security in Ijesaland and for the success of the APC candidate at the election.
Party leaders subsequently addressed the gathering, condemning the reported killings and expressing concern over the potential impact of political violence on the August 15 election.
Senator Adenigba Fadahunsi, in his address, urged APC members and supporters to remain peaceful while intensifying their mobilisation efforts across the constituency.
He particularly implored party faithful to mobilise all eligible voters and ensure that they turn out to vote for the APC candidate, Asiwaju Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji, at the August 15 governorship election.
Fadahunsi stressed the importance of translating the party’s mobilisation efforts into votes at the polls, urging members to remain committed to the electoral process despite the unfortunate incident.
Other APC leaders and stakeholders present included Hon. Sanya Omirin, Rt. Hon. Timothy Owoeye, Hon. Babatunde Ayeni, Hon. Lanre Balogun, Hon. Folarin Fafowora, Hon. Akinyele Akintola, Hon. Mrs. Kofo Omole, Hon. Akeem Olowoopejobori, Hon. Dayo Adewole, Hon. Foluso Adekoya and Hon. Temilade Adewusi.
Also present were APC Local Government Chairmen, women leaders and a large gathering of party faithful from across the Ijesa South Federal Constituency.
The incident has heightened concerns over political violence in Ilesa and the wider Osun State as political parties intensify their mobilisation ahead of the August 15 governorship election.
The protesters called on the relevant authorities to thoroughly investigate the reported killings and ensure that anyone found responsible is brought to justice.
