Badaru Abubakar Resigns as Nigeria’s Defence Minister

In a brief but significant statement, Nigeria’s Defence Minister, Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, announced his resignation effective immediately. The resignation letter, dated December 1, 2025, was addressed to President Bola Tinubu and cited health reasons as the cause of his departure.

President Tinubu accepted the resignation, expressing gratitude for Abubakar’s service to the nation and acknowledging the challenges faced during a period of heightened security concerns. The President is expected to notify the Senate of the nominee for the defence portfolio later this week.

Abubakar, 63, served two terms as Governor of Jigawa State from 2015 to 2023 before being appointed Defence Minister on August 21, 2023. His exit comes shortly after President Tinubu declared a national security emergency, a move that will be detailed in the coming days.

Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, confirmed the resignation in a statement issued on Monday.

The nation now awaits the President’s next steps in filling the critical defence role amid ongoing security challenges.
