Adebayo Olugbenga Adedamola – popularly known as “Fryo” – was declared the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate for Osun State on 2 December 2025 after securing 919 of 957 valid votes in the party’s primary. His nomination followed the unexpected resignation of Governor Ademola Adeleke, who left the PDP citing the party’s ongoing leadership crisis.
Adedamola’s candidacy is controversial because, decades earlier, he was one of the 13 people arraigned in connection with the 2001 murder of former Attorney‑General and Justice Minister Chief Bola Ige. Ige was shot dead on 23 December 2001 in Ibadan amid a fierce political feud between then‑Governor Bisi Akande and his deputy Iyiola Omisore. In January 2002, human‑rights lawyer Festus Keyamo presented Adedamola to the press as an informant who allegedly knew the killers and claimed that Omisore had offered Adedamola N5 million to kill Ige. Adedamola later surrendered to police, but he subsequently retracted his statements, accusing Keyamo of pressuring him to implicate Omisore.
The case proceeded with a total of 13 suspects, including several political associates and security personnel. By 16 October 2004, the remaining six accused – Adedamola among them – were discharged after the judge ruled that the prosecution had failed to prove the charges of conspiracy and murder. No one has ever been convicted for Ige’s murder, and the case remains unsolved.
The emergence of a candidate with this legal history has sparked sharp reactions on social media and among civil‑society groups, with critics questioning the PDP’s vetting process and supporters arguing that the matter was already adjudicated.
