IDC Concludes Second General Election, Elects New Executives to Steer Ijesaland Development

The Ijesa Development Council (IDC), the umbrella body for development-focused organisations in Ijesaland, has successfully concluded its second general election, ushering in a new set of executive members to pilot the affairs of the council for the next three years.

The election took place on Friday, December 26, 2025, during the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the council held at the Conference Room of the Iwude Ijesa Secretariat, beside the Ilesa City Hall, Palace Square, Ilesa.

IDC, which comprises over 40 clubs and associations at home and in the diaspora, was established to harness human and material resources for the economic, social and political development of Ijesaland. Since its inception, the council has played a key role in empowering individuals and organisations through skills acquisition, entrepreneurship, education, and strategic community engagement aimed at stimulating local economic growth.

The AGM was presided over by the outgoing President, Mr. Supo Shadiya, who presented a comprehensive report of the council’s activities over the past three years. He expressed appreciation to the patrons, Board of Trustees, executive members, delegates and the general congress for their support, before moving a motion for the dissolution of the outgoing executive committee to pave the way for fresh elections.

The election was conducted under the chairmanship of Professor Foluso Okumadewa, Chairman of the 2025 Election Committee, with the presence of patrons, Board of Trustees members and observers, including Baba Sawe, Professor Tayo, Professor Kanmi Abimbola, Professor Olajide Oke, and other prominent sons and daughters of Ijesaland.

Addressing delegates, Professor Okumadewa outlined the election guidelines and procedures before the commencement of voting. A member of the Board of Trustees, Professor Tayo, also commended the progress recorded by the council and expressed optimism about its future.

The exercise was described as peaceful and orderly, with most positions returned unopposed, while a few were keenly contested—an indication of the confidence reposed in the leadership of the council by its members.

At the end of the exercise, the following officers were elected to lead the IDC for the next tenure:

  • Mr. Supo Shadiya – President

  • Chief (Mrs.) Dupe Gbadebo – Vice President I

  • Engr. Olugbemiga Abudiore – Vice President II

  • Dr. James Oladiipo Folorunso – General Secretary

  • Dr. Olusanya Olujide – Assistant General Secretary

  • Chief (Mrs.) Yemisi Ariyibi – Treasurer

  • Mr. Olatunbosun Akinwumi – Financial Secretary

  • Mr. Olayemi Moses Fadipe – Publicity Secretary

  • Mrs. Bosede Abolaji-Alice Odole – Social Secretary

Commending the outgoing executives, Baba Sawe applauded their stewardship and urged the new leadership to build on the solid foundation already laid.

Professor Okumadewa subsequently presented certificates of return to the newly elected officers and congratulated them on their emergence.

In his acceptance speech, the re-elected President, Mr. Supo Shadiya, thanked members for the confidence reposed in the new executive committee, pledging to work with IDC congress members and Ijesa indigenes at home and abroad to pursue a large-scale industrialisation agenda aimed at job creation, economic growth and sustainable development across Ijesaland.

The AGM and election marked another milestone in the collective drive towards a united, peaceful and economically prosperous Ijesaland.
