A male adult was discovered dead in a drainage ditch at the Tipper Garage area of Odo Iro, Ilesa West Local Governmet, around mid‑day on Tuesday. The corpse was partially unclad and lay in the open, sparking immediate concern among residents.
According to a trader who asked to be known only as Mama Jumbo‑Jumbo, the man had been seen alive at the same spot two days earlier. “People were scared to go near him,” she told UNIQ FM News. “He told us his family had brought him here.” She added that the community alerted security agents as soon as the body was found.
Local authorities have yet to determine how the victim ended up in the drainage. The police and the Osun State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) were notified and arrived at the scene, but the responsibility for removing the corpse remains unclear. With several local government areas in Osun currently grappling with security challenges, residents are questioning which agency will take charge of the evacuation.
In a similar incident last month, a body discovered under an Osun bridge was evacuated after NSCDC personnel, assisted by local government officials, arranged for its removal to prevent decomposition ¹. That case highlighted the need for coordinated action between the NSCDC, the police and the relevant local council.
As of now, the Ilesa community awaits clarification on whether the Ilesa West Local Government will deploy its health and sanitation team, or if the state police will coordinate the removal. The delay has raised fears of public‑health risks, especially given the body’s exposed state.
The police have opened an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death and are urging anyone with information to come forward.
