No fewer than five persons, including children, lost their lives in a tragic road accident that occurred on Saturday night at Omi-Asoro Junction in Ilesa, Osun State.
According to eyewitness accounts, the fatal crash occurred at about 9:00 p.m. following a head-on collision involving a Hummer bus and a commercial minibus, popularly known as "Korope."
Witnesses at the scene said the Hummer bus, which was reportedly loaded with goods including phone accessories and electronic appliances, was travelling from Ilorin, Kwara State, en route to Warri, Delta State, when the accident occurred.
One of the survivors disclosed that the collision happened suddenly, leaving little opportunity for either driver to avoid the impact.
The force of the crash was said to be devastating, leaving both vehicles badly damaged and mangled beyond recognition. Several victims reportedly died on the spot, while others sustained varying degrees of injuries.
Eyewitnesses further revealed that the impact threw some victims onto the highway and nearby bushes, creating a chaotic scene that attracted sympathizers, motorists, and residents of the area.
Rescue operations were jointly carried out by concerned passers-by, local residents, and officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), who worked tirelessly to evacuate victims from the wreckage.
The injured victims were subsequently transported to Zion Hospital in Ilesa for medical treatment, while the bodies of those who lost their lives were deposited at a mortuary.
As of the time of filing this report, authorities were yet to release the identities of the deceased victims, while investigations into the cause of the accident are expected to commence.
The incident has once again raised concerns over road safety and the need for motorists to exercise caution while travelling on major highways, particularly during night journeys.
