The Office of Miss Ijesa has unveiled a community-driven health initiative tagged "Fit and Health Ijesa 2026" as part of efforts to promote awareness and early detection of ovarian cancer among women and young people in Ijesaland.
The programme, themed "Breaking the Silence: Together Against Ovarian Cancer," was hosted by the reigning Miss Ijesa 2025, Judith Oyinade Adesoyin, a 300-level Accounting student of the University of Ilesa and an Associate Accounting Technician (AAT), at Felates Club, Omo-Asoro, Ilesa, Osun State.
The event brought together students from the University of Ilesa and several secondary schools across Ilesa, including St. Margaret's Girls Secondary School, C & S High School, CAC Commercial High School, Obokun High School, Methodist High School, United Anglican Methodist High School, and Ilesa Grammar School.
According to her, cultural silence surrounding reproductive health issues has continued to hinder early diagnosis and treatment, making it imperative to create platforms for education, awareness, and open conversations about women's health.
The programme aimed to educate participants on the symptoms, risk factors, preventive measures, and importance of early detection of ovarian cancer, often referred to by health professionals as a "silent killer" because of its subtle early-stage symptoms.
Health experts at the event explained that ovarian cancer develops when abnormal cells grow in the ovaries, fallopian tubes, or peritoneum. They noted that the disease often presents symptoms such as persistent abdominal bloating, pelvic pain, difficulty eating, feeling full quickly, and changes in urinary habits.
The keynote presentation was delivered by Nurse Apanisile Funke I., a registered nurse and oncology specialist, who provided detailed insights into the causes, symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment options available for ovarian cancer.
The event also featured a panel discussion with health professionals and advocates, including Dr. Omoboriowo Damilola Isaac, Mrs. Ayobami Ayodeji, and Awwal Mariam Olamide, who engaged participants in interactive sessions and answered questions on women's reproductive health.
Speaking on the initiative, Adesoyin commended the support of Owa Clement Adesuyi Haastrup, the Paramount Ruler of Ijesaland, as well as the Iwude Ijesa Planning Committee led by Chief Afolabi Igbaroola (Chairman) and Alagba Wale Idowu (Vice Chairman).
She described ovarian cancer as one of the most dangerous yet least-discussed health challenges affecting women worldwide, stressing the urgent need for increased public awareness. According to her, the campaign was conceived in response to the growing incidence of late diagnosis in Nigeria, where many ovarian cancer cases are detected only at advanced stages due to limited awareness, inadequate screening, and delayed medical attention.
Organisers said the initiative targeted approximately 150 participants, including students, women, youths, families, and community leaders, with the objective of increasing awareness and encouraging proactive health-seeking behaviour.
The programme featured expert-led presentations, panel discussions, interactive question-and-answer sessions, and the distribution of educational materials designed to improve public understanding of ovarian cancer and reduce the stigma often associated with reproductive health conversations.
Beyond awareness creation, organisers expressed optimism that the initiative would contribute to improved health outcomes through earlier diagnosis, increased medical consultations, and stronger community support systems for women affected by the disease.
The Office of Miss Ijesa also called on corporate organisations, healthcare institutions, non-governmental organisations, media partners, and development agencies to support future editions of the programme through sponsorship, technical expertise, and public awareness campaigns.
Judith Adesoyin, who combines academic excellence with her work as a fashion designer and cultural ambassador, said the initiative reflects her commitment to using her platform as Miss Ijesa to promote meaningful social causes and improve the well-being of communities across Ijesaland.
