The outcome of the August 15, 2026 governorship election in Irewole Local Government Area of Osun State has sparked fresh debate over the political influence of Senator Lere Oyewumi in his hometown of Ikire, following a decisive victory recorded by the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Asiwaju Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji, popularly known as AMBO.
According to the results cited from the election, the APC secured 29,972 votes in Irewole Local Government, while the Accord Party polled 10,934 votes, giving the APC a margin of 19,038 votes.
The result has generated considerable political discussion because Oyewumi, who is from Ikire and serves as the Deputy Minority Leader of the Senate, was the Director-General of the campaign council supporting Governor Ademola Adeleke in the 2026 governorship election.
Despite his prominent political position and longstanding involvement in the politics of the area, the APC's performance in Irewole, particularly in Oyewumi's political base, has been interpreted by APC supporters as a significant setback for the senator's campaign machinery.
Oyebamiji, an indigene of the area, secured victory across all 11 wards in Irewole Local Government, according to the results referenced in the analysis.
The APC candidate was also reported to have recorded a particularly strong performance in Ward 9, Oyewumi's ward, where he reportedly obtained 75.1 per cent of the votes.
The development has therefore become a talking point among political observers, with supporters of AMBO arguing that the result demonstrated the candidate's strong grassroots acceptance in Irewole despite the high-profile political status of his opponent.

In the 2022 governorship election, the APC reportedly polled 18,198 votes in Irewole, while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) recorded 14,216 votes, giving the APC a margin of 3,982 votes.
Similarly, in the 2014 governorship election, the APC was reported to have won Irewole Local Government with 18,328 votes, against the PDP's 10,330 votes, representing a margin of 7,998 votes.
The latest figures therefore indicate a substantial increase in the APC's margin in Irewole compared with the 2022 election.
For APC supporters, the development represents more than an electoral victory. They see it as evidence that AMBO was able to establish a strong connection with voters in the local government despite the political weight of the opposition campaign.
Oyewumi has previously occupied the position of chairman of Irewole Local Government and has remained a prominent figure in Osun politics. His political career has also included his emergence as a senator representing Osun East Senatorial District.
However, his inability to secure a victory for his preferred candidate in his immediate political base in the 2026 governorship election has prompted questions about the extent of his current grassroots influence.
The 'Konko Jabele' Factor
Another issue that featured prominently in the campaign was the political philosophy associated with the "Konko Jabele" movement, which Oyewumi was reported by political opponents to have championed ahead of the 2026 election.
The concept was presented during the political contest as an argument for prioritising political loyalty and affiliation in determining the direction of the electorate.
Oyewumi was also reported to have opposed the emergence of Oyebamiji as the APC governorship candidate.

For Oyewumi and his political camp, however, the result presents an opportunity to reassess their grassroots mobilisation strategy ahead of 2027.
Ultimately, whether the 2026 governorship result represents a temporary electoral setback or a broader shift in political allegiance in Irewole will be determined by future elections.
For now, however, the 19,038-vote margin recorded by the APC in Irewole Local Government has undoubtedly become one of the major talking points in the post-election political calculations of Ikire and Osun State.
