The National Assembly has transmitted the Constitution Alteration Bill seeking the establishment of State Police Services to the 36 State Houses of Assembly for consideration and approval.
The Clerk to the National Assembly, Kamoru Ogunlana, disclosed that the Bill was transmitted to the State Assemblies on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, with the expectation that the lawmakers would consider and communicate their resolutions within one month.
Ogunlana, however, clarified that the 30-day period is an administrative timeframe and does not constitute a constitutional deadline.
The National Assembly said it recognises the constitutional responsibility and independence of the various State Houses of Assembly in considering proposed constitutional amendments.
Under the constitutional amendment procedure, the proposed State Police Bill requires approval by at least two-thirds of the 36 State Houses of Assembly before the amendment process can proceed to its next stage.
The State Police Bill had earlier been passed by both chambers of the National Assembly, marking a major legislative step towards the proposed restructuring of policing and security arrangements in the country.
The National Assembly said it would take the next constitutional steps after receiving the resolutions of the State Houses of Assembly.
It also reaffirmed its commitment to due process, institutional cooperation and strict compliance with the provisions of the Constitution throughout the amendment process.
