PROUDLY IJESA: Meet Oluwafikayomi Oluwadamilola Tomori, an Ijesa Man Ready to Make Nigeria Proud

Oluwafikayomi Oluwadamilola Tomori was born to Nigerian parents of Ilesa origin in Canada but grew up in England making him eligible to play for the three countries, Nigeria, Canada and England.

He started off playing for the Canada Under-20 before he was called up for the England Under-19.

He is 21.

Anyway, Tomori was born to Nigerian parents in Calgary, Canada, but by the age of eight, he was over in London and part of Chelsea Academy. So he's yet another one of these life-long True Blues who are now starting to come of age and of talent and are knocking on the door of greatness. He broke onto the public scene last season, often playing for the U21s as a first year scholar.

Fikayo Tomori is a nephew to the Deputy Governor of the state of Osun, Mrs. Grace Titi Laoye-Tomori. It is her desire to see Fikayo plays in the Nigeria’s Super Eagles team. Tomori Fikayo, who is presently on loan to Hull City from English Premiership Giant Chelsea Football Club alongside Ola Aina (both play for Hull) has represented Canada and England at youth level and still eligible to play for the country. The Chelsea defender whose dad hails from Ilesha, Osun State was an important part of the English U-20 side that lifted the FIFA U-20 World Cup held in South Korea and also was part of the most successful Chelsea Youth Side, winning the FA Youth Cup and the UEFA Youth League back to back in the 2014-15 and 2015-16 Season respectively.

Tomori who is 6 ft 1 is eligible to represent Nigeria at international level through his parents, Canada through his birth in Calgary and England through his upbringing having lived in the country since he was a toddler. In a chat, the Osun State number two citizen spoke of her desire to see Fikayo play for Nigeria in the nearest future even though he has played for both Canada and England at youth level. “It would be my dream to see him play for the Super Eagles someday. We are so proud of him, so also is his parents. He is a true professional and also very humble. He works so hard for his team and no wonder he has won so much at such young age.

“I was with his dad recently and we spoke a lot about his chances of coming to play for Nigeria soon. Right now, he is focusing on his club career and we hope he will come represent his father land soon,” she stated. On the chances of the Super Eagles going far in the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, Mrs Tomori said she thinks the Super Eagles have the chance of becoming the first African team to reach the Semi-Final of the World Cup. “We have a great chance to go far and I believe we have a great squad to do that. I have watched one or two of their games and I was impressed. We are optimistic we will go far”, she concluded.
