It was also gathered that the timely intervention of dockworkers at the terminal saved other equipment from further damage.

Our correspondent also gathered that the fire incident happened around 11 am on Thursday.

The source said, “The dockworkers who were on duty on Thursday morning spent close to three hours to assist personnel from the fire service to combat the inferno”

One of the sources said, “The foreign crew also contributed to putting off the inferno of the mobile crane.”

It was confirmed that no life was lost to the inferno but there were indications that some properties were destroyed.

Reacting to the development, the Group Head, of Corporate Communications, SIFAX Group, Muyiwa Akande, in a chat with our correspondent on Thursday night, denied any vessel catching fire at the terminal.

He said it was the shore crane belonging to the company that caught fire.

"No vessel caught fire. It was one of our equipment, a shore crane that went up in flames."

He, however, didn't give details of the cause of the inferno.

Muyiwa said, “No vessel caught fire, operations are going on fine at our terminal now. You can come around and take a look at the vessel, it is fine and we are working well. This is an international business. If any vessel has caught fire, I am sure the international media would even be aware by now.

"Even the Nigerian Ports Authority and other agencies would be on the ground at the terminal by now; operations are going on well at our terminal as we speak. Because we have a vessel at berth to discharge. This is an open business and we cannot hide information from the media our friends,” Muyiwa said.
