Gunmen have reportedly attacked the convoy of Murtala Yakubu-Ajaka, governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Kogi.
The incident occurred on Wednesday when Ajaka and other SDP chieftains were returning from a stakeholders’ meeting in Ogori Magongo axis of Kogi.
The gunmen were said to have engaged security operatives in a gun duel before abandoning two of their vehicles.
After the attack, an assistant superintendent of police (ASP) was arrested for allegedly leading the thugs who carried out the attack.
In a viral video, the police officer in a pool of his own blood, was seen being interrogated.
‘WE’RE INVESTIGATING THE INCIDENT’
In a statement on Thursday, William Aya, Kogi police spokesperson, said the command is investigating the video.
Aya said the Kogi police command is determined to provide a level playing field for all political parties.
“The commissioner of police while condemning the incident noted that the deputy commissioner of police in charge of criminal investigation department has been tasked to commence investigation,” the statement reads.
“The CP reiterates the command’s unwavering commitment to continue to engage the critical stakeholders in election security management to ensure a secure environment for electoral process.”
PREVIOUS ATTACKS
On July 9, hoodlums attacked and vandalised SDP secretariat in Lokoja, Kogi state capital.
On July 24, suspected arsonists burnt down the campaign office of Yakubu-Ajaka in Lokoja.
