Panic gripped Broad Street, Lagos Island, on Tuesday as fire engulfed Afriland Towers, a high-rise building that houses a branch of the United Bank for Africa (UBA) on its ground floor.
Eyewitnesses told Lagos Reporters that several people are currently trapped inside the building as thick smoke billows from multiple floors. Emergency responders are yet to confirm the cause of the fire, but efforts are underway to evacuate those still inside.
The incident has caused heavy gridlock in the busy commercial hub as passersby and traders watched rescue efforts unfold. Security operatives have cordoned off the area to ensure safety and give room for emergency services.
As of press time, no official casualty figure has been released. Lagos Reporters will continue to provide updates as the situation develops.
