It was a moment of pride and historic significance for Ijesaland as the region marks four years since the commissioning of the Ijesaland Geriatric Centre (IGC) and the announcement of the upgrade of the Osun State College of Education, Ilesa, to what is now the University of Ilesa.

The dual milestones, achieved on March 31, 2022, have continued to resonate as defining achievements in the socio-economic and developmental trajectory of the region.

The historic event, which coincided with the inauguration of the Ijesaland Geriatric Centre, was widely hailed as a testament to visionary leadership, accountability, and the power of community-driven development.

The Ijesaland Geriatric Centre, regarded as one of the largest of its kind in West Africa and among the few specialized facilities for elderly care in Nigeria, was conceived through prudent financial management. The project reportedly originated from the reinvestment of ₦36 million saved during the construction of the ultra-modern Owa Obokun Adimula Palace, eventually evolving into a ₦1 billion healthcare facility.

Notably, the project was entirely funded by sons and daughters of Ijesaland, both at home and in the diaspora, without financial support from any tier of government or external institutions. The initiative has since become a symbol of communal sacrifice and collective responsibility.

Four years on, the facility continues to impact lives by improving the quality of healthcare available to elderly citizens across the six local government areas of Ijesaland and beyond, while also contributing to increased life expectancy.

At the same event in 2022, former Osun State Governor, Adegboyega Oyetola, announced the upgrade of the then 43-year-old Osun State College of Education, Ilesa, to a full-fledged university. The institution is now known as the University of Ilesa (UNILESA).

The governor explained that the decision followed extensive consultations and appeals by prominent indigenes of Ijesaland, alongside the late Owa Obokun Adimula, Gabriel Aromolaran II.

The announcement was met with widespread jubilation, as it marked a significant leap in expanding access to higher education in the region.

Observers have since described the twin achievements as watershed moments that combined healthcare advancement with educational transformation, reinforcing Ijesaland’s growing reputation as a hub of development excellence.

Key stakeholders, including project management teams and hundreds of donors, were instrumental in bringing the vision to reality. Over 120 individual donors, alongside corporate bodies, community groups, and diaspora organizations, contributed hundreds of millions of naira towards the project, underscoring a rare display of unity and commitment.

Special recognition has also been accorded to major contributors and committees that oversaw the planning, execution, and delivery of the projects, ensuring transparency and efficiency throughout the process.

As the anniversary is marked, community leaders and stakeholders have reiterated the need to sustain the spirit of collective development that birthed the landmark projects.

The commemorative message issued by Asiwaju of Ijesaland and Chairman of the Ijesa Community Development Assembly, Asiwaju Olayinka Fasuyi, highlighted the enduring legacy of the projects and called for continued unity in driving further development across the region.

Four years after, the Ijesaland Geriatric Centre and the University of Ilesa stand not only as monuments of progress but also as enduring symbols of what can be achieved through shared vision, accountability, and community collaboration.

Four Years After: Ijesaland Celebrates Landmark Healthcare, Education Milestones

Today marks exactly four years since a defining and unforgettable chapter in the history of Ijesaland was written, through the commissioning of the Ijesaland Geriatric Centre (IGC) and the historic announcement of the upgrade of the 43-year old Osun State College of Education Osun State College of Education, Ilesa, into a full-fledged university, now known as the University of Ilesa (UNILESA).

The landmark occasion, held on Thursday, 31st March 2022, during the inauguration of the Ijesa Community Geriatric Centre, remains a powerful symbol of visionary leadership, prudent resource management, and unprecedented community-driven development.

The Ijesaland Geriatric Centre (IGC), widely acknowledged as the second geriatric centre in Nigeria and the largest of its kind in West Africa, was birthed through the wise reinvestment of ₦36 million saved from the prudent, transparent, and accountable construction of the 9-month Ultra-Modern Owa Obokun Adimula Palace. That seed of accountability and fiscal discipline was carefully nurtured, eventually blossoming into a ₦1 billion healthcare legacy project that continues to serve humanity.

Importantly, the entire funding of the IGC from foundation to completion was borne solely by illustrious Sons and Daughters of Ijesaland, both at home and in the diaspora. It must be reiterated that no Kobo were drawn from Local Government, State Government, Federal Government, or any external institution went into the construction and delivery of this N1B (One Billion Naira) Project. It was a pure expression of communal sacrifice, shared vision, and collective responsibility.

Today, four years on, the impact remains profound. The Ijesaland Geriatric Centre (IGC) has continued to rekindle hope and significantly improve the quality of life and life expectancy of hundreds of elderly citizens across the six Local Government Areas of Ijesaland and neighbouring communities across Nigeria.

The historic event also delivered a second monumental achievement for Ijesaland. At the same venue, the then Executive Governor of Osun State, His Excellency, Adegboyega Oyetola, formally announced the upgrade of the 43-year-old Osun State College of Education, Ilesa, into a full-fledged university.

In his widely celebrated declaration, the Governor stated that the decision followed careful and painstaking consideration of the request made by prominent Sons and Daughters of Ijesaland, in collaboration with the revered Owa Obokun Adimula of Ijesaland, Late His Imperial Majesty, Oba (Dr.) Gabriel Aromolaran II, CFR,LL.D.

He affirmed:

*“Let me say that, having looked into and examined carefully the request made by prominent sons and daughters of Ijesa Land, and the Owa, our highly-revered Royal Father, His Imperial Majesty, Owa Obokun Adimula of Ijesaland, Oba (Dr.) Gabriel Aromolaran II, Government has decided to upgrade the Osun College of Education, Ilesa, to a full-fledged University.”*

The dual milestones; the commissioning of the Ijesaland Geriatric Centre (IGC) and the birth of UNILESA were met with widespread jubilation across Ijesaland and among its eminent Sons and Daughters in the diaspora. They are today regarded as watershed moments that fused healthcare innovation with educational transformation in one historic stroke.

Four years later, these achievements continue to stand as enduring legacies of sacrifice, visionary leadership, and collective progress, reinforcing Ijesaland’s place on the national map of development excellence and human advancement.
