British High Commission Visits Osun APC Campaign Office, Party Raises Security Concerns Ahead of Governorship Election

The Osun State All Progressives Congress (APC) Governorship Campaign Council on Tuesday received a delegation from the British High Commission at its campaign office, where it expressed concerns over security and political violence ahead of the August 15, 2026 governorship election.

Speaking during the courtesy visit, the APC governorship candidate, Asiwaju Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji (AMBO), welcomed the delegation and described the visit as a demonstration of the international community's commitment to Nigeria's democratic process and the conduct of peaceful, credible and transparent elections.

Oyebamiji said the APC considered it necessary to draw the attention of the British High Commission and other international observers to what he described as an increasing atmosphere of political violence, intimidation and thuggery allegedly directed at APC members and supporters in Osun State.

According to him, the party believes the alleged attacks, if not properly addressed, could undermine public confidence in the electoral process and threaten the peaceful conduct of the governorship election.

The APC candidate said the concerns had already been reported to the Nigeria Police Force, noting that during a recent visit to Osun State, the Inspector-General of Police acknowledged receiving security briefings from the Osun State Commissioner of Police regarding criminal activities and security challenges within the state.

He urged law enforcement agencies to carry out thorough, impartial and professional investigations into all reported cases in accordance with the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The campaign council also claimed that more than 40 APC members and supporters had allegedly been victims of politically related attacks across different parts of Osun State since 2022.

During the address, the APC listed several incidents involving the deaths of its members and supporters, including the killings of Tajudeen Rabiu, Waheed, Muraina Olayiwola, Olalekan Ososondi, Ismail Dudu, Adeboye Ademoroti, Saheed Oyegunju, Hon. Remi Abass, Akeem, Kazeem Oyebamiji and Muideen Alowonle.

The party alleged that some of the attacks were carried out by individuals linked to the Osun State Government, while also accusing security agencies of failing to bring some of the suspects to justice.

The APC specifically alleged that some suspects previously declared wanted by the police continued to move freely despite facing allegations in connection with violent crimes.

Addressing the British High Commission delegation, Oyebamiji appealed to the international community to maintain close observation of developments in Osun State before, during and after the governorship election.

He said sustained election observation, continuous engagement with stakeholders and advocacy for peaceful democratic conduct would help strengthen public confidence in the electoral process.

The APC governorship candidate reaffirmed the party's commitment to democratic principles, constitutional governance and peaceful political participation.

He stated that the campaign council had consistently urged its members and supporters to remain law-abiding, reject violence and cooperate with security agencies despite what he described as repeated provocations.

"As we approach Election Day, we remain committed to conducting our campaign peacefully and responsibly while encouraging all political actors to place the interest of democracy and the people of Osun State above every other consideration," Oyebamiji said.

He thanked the British High Commission for the visit and expressed hope that the collective efforts of domestic and international stakeholders would ensure a peaceful election in which every eligible voter could exercise their constitutional right without fear, intimidation or violence.

The governorship election in Osun State is scheduled to hold on Saturday, August 15, 2026.
