FG Arraigns Three Men Over Oyo School Kidnapping, Terrorism and Illegal Mining Charges

The Federal Government has charged three men over the kidnapping of students and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.

The suspects are Abdulrazak Umar, also known as Abu Khalifa or Abu Khalid; Yunusa Musa, also known as Yunusa bin Musa; and Shamsu Adamu Sani, also known as Abu Itisar.

The 10-count charge was filed before the Federal High Court in Abuja. The charges include terrorism, kidnapping, concealing information, incitement, and illegal mining.

According to the charge sheet, the three men, who are from Suleja Local Government Area of Niger State, allegedly worked with Muhammad Sani, Jibril Mohammed, and Ibrahim Khabab between January and May 2026 to kidnap school children and teachers in Oyo State.

The Federal Government also accused them of helping to carry out the kidnappings and hiding information about the identities and activities of the suspected masterminds, even though they knew about the plot.

The charge further claimed that on or about June 2, 2026, the three defendants admitted belonging to Darul Salam, which was described as an affiliate of Jama'atu Ansarul Muslimina Fi Biladis Sudan (Ansaru), a terrorist group that has been banned in Nigeria.

In addition, Abdulrazak Umar is accused of providing training and instructions to members of the group. He was also accused of using a WhatsApp group called "The Oneness of Allah is the Foundation of Peace" to encourage members to carry out terrorist activities.

The government said these actions violated the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act and the Cybercrime (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, 2015.

In the final count, Umar was accused of engaging in illegal gold mining at streams in the Chaza area of Suleja Local Government Area between 2024 and 2026, an offence under the Miscellaneous Offences Act.

The three defendants are expected to appear before the Federal High Court in Abuja next week to answer the charges.
