Alausa Charges Provosts as Colleges of Education Prepare to Run NCE and Bachelor’s Degree Programmes from 2026/2027 Academic Session

The Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, has urged provosts of colleges of education across Nigeria to ensure the proper implementation of the Federal Government’s dual-mandate policy.

The policy allows qualified colleges of education to offer both the Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) and approved Bachelor’s Degree programmes in Education.

Under the new arrangement, students will spend three years studying for the NCE. Those who meet the required conditions can then continue for another two years to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in Education.

Full implementation of the policy is expected to begin in the 2026/2027 academic session.

Alausa, who was represented by the Director of Colleges of Education at the Federal Ministry of Education, Dr Cecilia Uba, made the call at the National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE) Teacher Education Leadership and Impact Award Dinner in Abuja.

The minister said the policy would help improve colleges of education, provide better training for teachers and create more opportunities for students to advance their education and careers.

He said its success would depend on good leadership, accountability and cooperation among all stakeholders.

According to him, the government expects college leaders and other education partners to work together to achieve the goals of the policy.

The event was organised by the NCCE in partnership with Gosima Group as part of activities marking the commission’s national retreat and workshop on the implementation of the dual mandate and its strategic plan for colleges of education.

Alausa also assured Nigerians that the Federal Ministry of Education would continue to work with the NCCE, provosts and other stakeholders to improve teacher education in the country.

He said the government was committed to ensuring that teacher education in Nigeria meets modern standards and competes favourably with other countries.

The minister also praised the NCCE for organising the awards to recognise education leaders whose hard work and dedication had helped improve the education sector.

He urged the award winners to see the recognition as a call to do more, bring new ideas and continue serving the country.
