Unknown gunmen on Sunday evening abducted a lecturer of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile Ife along Ife/Ibadan expressway.
Professor Olayinka Oladiran Adegbehingbe was kidnapped near Ikire, around 8.50 pm minute while traveling to Ife. He is a Nigerian Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgeon. After graduating in Medicine at the Obafemi Awolowo University Ile Ife, he completed his residency in Orthopaedics and Trauma at the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital Complex, Ile Ife. His clinical practice is in Paediatric Orthopaedics and Musculoskeletal Oncology. Dr. Adegbehingbe is actively involved in research on the Ponseti Clubfoot treatment, Birth Trauma, and Radiation Effects & Environmental Factors in cancer.
An eyewitness, Azeez Olagunju, told our correspondent that several vehicles ran into the ambush by the gunmen.
He said, “several vehicles were stopped by some men armed with guns. Many people fled into the bush because we thought it was an armed robbery attack.
“Later, we were told a man had been abducted but I don’t know who the person is. Those that fled into the bush later returned after the men had left the road.”
The gunmen, who were shooting sporadically into the air blocked the road while their operation lasted.
The abducted Professor was said to have been in company of wife inside the vehicle when they were attacked, but his wife managed to escape from the scene.
The director of media, Ooni of Ife Palace, Moses Olafare, said he received an anonymous call when it was discovered the man abducted works in Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife.
Olafare also explained that he had a telephone conversation with the wife of Professor Adegbehingbe while she was in a police station in Apomu to report the incident.
