The Oyo State Police Command has confirmed the discovery of a liquid suspected to be Automotive Gas Oil (diesel) in a well at Omikunle, Yemetu area of Ibadan.
According to the Command, the incident was reported on Saturday, September 6, at about 6:50 p.m. Officers from the Yemetu Division, led by the Divisional Police Officer, immediately moved to the scene following a tip-off.
On arrival, the team found the well contaminated with a substance believed to be diesel, with several residents attempting to fetch it using containers.
To prevent public exposure to danger, the well and its surroundings were secured by armed personnel and members of the neighbourhood watch.
The Oyo State Ministry of Environment has since been contacted to manage the safe evacuation of the substance.
Preliminary investigation pointed to a possible leak from an underground storage tank in the vicinity.
The Command assured that the situation is calm and under control while investigations continue.
It also advised residents to remain cautious and report any suspicious activity to security agencies.
