The Osun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has criticised the leadership of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) in the state over its planned resumption from a prolonged strike, accusing the union of overstepping its authority and engaging in partisan politics.
In a press statement dated 30 December 2025 and signed by the party’s Director of Media and Information, Mogaji Kola Olabisi, the APC alleged that the Osun NULGE, under the chairmanship of Dr. Kehinde Nathaniel Ogungbangbe, had become an extension of the political interests of Governor Ademola Adeleke.
The party described as “welcome but suspicious” the union’s announcement indicating readiness to resume work after about ten months of what it termed a “sympathy strike,” insisting that the prolonged industrial action was allegedly orchestrated by the state government.
The APC maintained that NULGE lacks the constitutional authority to dictate which local government chairmen and councillors its members should work with, stressing that such actions fall outside the union’s statutory responsibilities.
According to the statement, the party questioned the role of the union in interpreting court judgments, noting that the matter surrounding the tenure of reinstated APC local government chairmen and councillors is still pending before the Federal High Court, Osogbo. The APC further argued that it is also before the court to determine whether any lawful local government election can be conducted while the tenure issue remains unresolved.
The party described the conditions allegedly attached to NULGE’s proposed resumption as “contemptuous, illegal, unacceptable and provocative,” adding that it was unprecedented for employees to dictate terms to their employers.
The APC warned that the conditional resumption could lead to chaos and disruption of peace across local government areas currently administered by reinstated APC chairmen and councillors. It also reminded NULGE leadership that a separate suit instituted by the union at the Osun State High Court is still pending, cautioning against acting as “judge in its own cause.”
The party alleged that the union’s stance was a calculated attempt to enable the entry of what it described as “unknown entities” into local government councils, referencing a recent Supreme Court judgment.
Consequently, the APC called on security agencies, including the Nigeria Police, the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), to remain vigilant and prevent any breakdown of law and order in the state’s council areas.
While urging security agencies to protect NULGE staff genuinely willing to resume work, the APC appealed to parents and guardians to caution youths against being used by political actors to foment unrest.
The party concluded by warning that should there be any breakdown of law and order arising from the union’s actions, the NULGE leadership under Dr. Ogungbangbe should be held responsible.
