APC Alleges Planned Protest at UBA Branches, Urges Osun Govt to Deny Involvement

The Osun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has raised an alarm over what it described as a planned protest by some pensioners at branches of the United Bank for Africa (UBA) across the state on Monday, alleging that the demonstration is being sponsored by the state government.

In a press statement issued on Sunday, February 8, 2026, and signed by the party’s Director of Media and Information, Mogaji Kola Olabisi, the APC claimed it had credible information suggesting that the administration of Governor Ademola Adeleke was allegedly mobilising retirees and other individuals to picket UBA branches in protest against the payment of federal allocations directly to reinstated APC local government chairmen and councillors.

The party alleged that some senior political functionaries in the Adeleke-led administration, alongside a member of the governor’s family, were involved in the purported plan, which it described as an attempt to attract public sympathy over the ongoing dispute surrounding local government federal allocations.

According to the APC, the alleged move followed what it termed the failure of the state government to overturn court judgments, including decisions of the Supreme Court, affirming the direct payment of federal allocations to local government councils. The party further claimed that previous efforts by the state government to influence public opinion through civil society groups, media personalities and professional bodies had been unsuccessful.

The opposition party also recalled what it described as the prolonged work stoppage by a faction of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) in the state, alleging that it was sponsored by the state government in reaction to a Court of Appeal judgment delivered on February 10, 2025, on the local government crisis.

In the statement, the APC criticised a recent Osun State Broadcasting Corporation (OSBC) programme aired on February 7, 2026, during which the state Commissioner for Information, Mr Kolapo Alimi, discussed the local government allocation issue. The party alleged that the programme was stage-managed to project the state government’s position.

The APC condemned what it described as the planned use of pensioners and non-pensioners for protests, warning that such actions could lead to a breakdown of law and order. It called on the Osun State Commissioner of Police and other security agencies to intervene and prevent any action capable of disrupting public peace.

The party also appealed to members of the public to caution elderly persons against participating in what it termed politically motivated protests, describing such actions as dangerous for senior citizens.

The APC stated that Governor Adeleke, members of his family and political associates should be held responsible should any violence arise from the alleged protest, unless they publicly distance themselves from the purported plan.

As of the time of filing this report, the Osun State Government had not issued an official response to the allegations.
