A new report by Premium Times has uncovered an alleged elaborate coup plot targeting Nigeria’s seat of power, with suspected conspirators reportedly planning to storm the Presidential Villa and detain top government officials.
According to the publication, the operation was designed as a coordinated military-style takeover involving multiple strategic locations across Abuja. The alleged plot included plans to capture President Bola Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, and House Speaker Tajudeen Abbas.
Multi-Layered Operation
Findings indicate that the alleged conspirators developed a multi-layered strategy aimed at neutralising Nigeria’s political and military leadership. Investigators described the plan as highly structured, with designated units assigned to specific targets.
At the core of the operation was a proposed assault on the Presidential Villa in Abuja. Sources revealed that a “decapitation unit” was tasked with capturing or eliminating key political figures.
The plot also reportedly extended to senior security officials, including National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, and Director-General of the State Security Service Adeola Ajayi.
Strategic Targets Identified
Beyond the Presidential Villa, the conspirators allegedly planned simultaneous attacks on critical military and national infrastructure. These included the Niger Barracks, the Armed Forces Complex in Garki, and the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport.
According to sources, the aim was to cripple military coordination and block escape routes, effectively handing control of the capital to the plotters within a short period.
Specific officers were reportedly assigned roles, including plans to target the Chief of Defence Staff, service chiefs, and the Commander of the Guards Brigade in order to weaken any organised resistance.
Weapons and Logistics
Security agencies reportedly recovered a cache of weapons and operational equipment linked to the suspects. Items seized include gun trucks, anti-aircraft weapons, rocket-propelled grenades, machine guns, and large volumes of ammunition.
Investigators also recovered several vehicles, including Toyota Hilux trucks and Volkswagen Golf cars, believed to have been intended for rapid deployment within the capital.
A senior security source described the scale of the preparations as evidence of “serious intent and preparedness.”
Arrests and Ongoing Investigations
The suspects were apprehended in a covert joint operation involving the Nigerian Army and the State Security Service. Authorities say investigations have been concluded, with findings forwarded to higher authorities for further action.
The alleged network reportedly includes both military officers and civilians. Among those named in connection with the case is Timipre Sylva, who is said to be at large alongside another high-profile suspect.
Families Demand Transparency
Meanwhile, families of the detained suspects have rejected the official narrative, alleging that their relatives have been held for over 160 days without due process.
At a press briefing, they called for an open trial and access to the detainees, raising concerns about inconsistencies in the investigation and warning against what they described as “trial by media.”
“We are not asking for favours,” the families stated. “We are asking for justice, transparency, and the truth.”
Next Steps
With investigations reportedly concluded, attention is now shifting to prosecution. However, uncertainty remains over whether the suspects will face a public trial or closed military proceedings.
The case continues to generate national attention amid broader concerns about security, governance, and adherence to the rule of law in Nigeria.
