President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the posting of 65 ambassadors-designate and high commissioners to various countries and international organisations, including the United Nations.

The announcement was made on Thursday in a statement signed by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, who revealed that the list comprises 34 non-career ambassadors and 31 career diplomats.

Diplomatic Clearance and Induction

According to the Presidency, the United Kingdom has already granted agrément for High Commissioner-designate Aminu Dalhatu, while France has approved agrément for Ambassador Ayodele Oke.

Onanuga explained that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has also forwarded the nominations of the remaining envoys to their respective host countries, requesting formal diplomatic approval.

Agrément is the official consent given by a host country to accept a foreign diplomat before the envoy can assume duty.

President Tinubu has also directed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to commence an induction programme for the ambassadors-designate ahead of their deployment.

The Senate confirmed all 65 nominees in December 2025 after screening them through the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs.

Nigeria currently maintains diplomatic missions in over 100 countries worldwide, including embassies, high commissions and consulates that manage the country’s bilateral and multilateral relations.

The latest postings mark the first major ambassadorial deployment since 2017, when former President Muhammadu Buhari last appointed ambassadors, leaving several Nigerian missions without substantive envoys for years.

The ambassadors-designate are expected to resume their duties after completing their induction and receiving agrément from their host countries.
