A tragic incident has left residents of Osun State in shock and mourning after a yet-to-be-identified commuter was allegedly shot dead by operatives of the Nigeria Customs Service on Sunday morning along the Osogbo–Iwo Road.
The heartbreaking incident reportedly occurred around 10 a.m. at the Onibueja area of Ido-Osun, near a police roadblock. Eyewitness accounts and a video from the scene show the victim slumped behind the steering wheel of his vehicle, which was riddled with multiple bullet holes.
According to residents, the operatives—said to be in mufti—were allegedly pursuing the driver from the Iwo end of the road before opening fire on the vehicle.
A resident of the Onibueja community, who identified himself simply as Sunday for security reasons, said the incident quickly drew a crowd of shocked and angry locals.
“The man was driving towards the Osogbo end from the Iwo side when some security operatives in mufti started shooting at his car. He died right there behind the wheel. The vehicle was riddled with bullets, and people rushed to the scene,” he said.
Sunday added that the presence of plain-clothed operatives made it difficult for residents to immediately identify the security agency involved, further fueling tension and anger among bystanders who demanded a thorough investigation.
The tragic killing has raised concerns about the safety of commuters and the conduct of security personnel operating along the busy route.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson of the Nigeria Police Force in Osun State, Abiodun Ojelabi, stated that the suspected shooters were operatives of the Nigeria Customs Service.
He disclosed that two individuals have already been arrested in connection with the incident, assuring the public that authorities would provide a full briefing as investigations progress.
As the community grapples with the shocking loss of life, residents and observers are calling for a transparent probe to determine the circumstances that led to the fatal shooting and to ensure accountability where necessary.
