The Osun State Governorship Campaign Council of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has called on the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Rilwan Disu, to immediately arrest and investigate Senator Lere Oyewumi over alleged links to political violence and the recent killings in Ikire.
The call followed the recent police investigation into the violent incident at Naira and Kobo Junction, Ikire, where two persons were reportedly killed.
In a statement signed by the Head of the Media and Publicity Committee of the Campaign Council, Engr. Oluremi Omowaiye, on Friday, August 28, the APC alleged that known associates and political thugs linked to Senator Oyewumi disarmed a police officer and used the officer's rifle to fire shots during the incident.
The Campaign Council said the revelations from the ongoing investigation, including the alleged confessions of some arrested suspects and the briefing by the Osun State Commissioner of Police, had reinforced its previous concerns about political violence in the state.
The APC body said it was particularly concerned that the developments surrounding the Ikire killings appeared consistent with what it described as previous warnings about violent political elements allegedly operating under the influence or protection of Senator Oyewumi.
“We therefore call on the IGP, Rilwan Disu, to immediately arrest and thoroughly investigate Senator Lere Oyewumi. His status as a serving senator must not confer immunity from criminal investigation where credible allegations have been made,” the statement said.
APC Revisits Remi Abass Murder
The Campaign Council also revisited the murder of Hon. Remi Abass, a former Chairman of Irewole Local Government and prominent APC chieftain, who was killed within the premises of the Irewole Local Government Secretariat.
According to the APC, one issue it wants investigators to revisit is the allegation that a rifle belonging to a security operative attached to Abass was taken from the operative on the day of the killing and later returned to a police station by Senator Oyewumi.
The Council questioned how the rifle allegedly came into the possession of the senator and called for a fresh investigation into the circumstances surrounding it.
It also alleged that money was provided to some security personnel to compromise investigations into Abass' murder, urging the police to thoroughly investigate the claim.
The APC further mentioned Jide Joda, whom it described as a loyalist and political appointee of the state government, saying he was arrested in connection with the murder, later granted bail and subsequently declared wanted after allegedly jumping bail.
The Campaign Council questioned why the police had yet to rearrest him.
APC Links Suspect to Other Political Killings
The Campaign Council also called for further investigation into a suspect identified as “Ayẹwo,” whom it alleged had been identified by arrested suspects as the person who fired the shots that killed the two victims at Naira and Kobo Junction.
The APC alleged that Ayẹwo had previously been linked to incidents of political violence in Osun State and specifically called for investigation into his alleged connection with the killing of Saheed Oyegunju, Ward 9 Treasurer of the APC in Irewole.
The Council alleged that Senator Oyewumi had used his political position and influence at the National Assembly to avoid arrest and prosecution over previous allegations of political violence.
It urged the Inspector-General of Police to ensure that political office did not interfere with the investigation or prosecution of anyone found culpable.
“The IGP must act professionally, independently and in accordance with the law. Senator Lere Oyewumi is a senator, not a sacred cow. His membership of the National Assembly does not place him above the law,” the Council stated.
The APC Campaign Council added that the police must demonstrate that no Nigerian, regardless of political status, is above the law when credible allegations of murder and violent crimes arise.
