A group of workers, under the aegis of Osun Workers Union (OWU), has commended the all Heads of Professional Fora, comprising Head of Directors of Administration and Head of HLA, for signalling to return to work after six months strike action called by the Dr Nathaniel Ogungbangbe-led National Union of Local Governments Employees (NULGE) in Osun State.
At a meeting allegedly called at the instance of the Chief of Staff to Governor Ademola Adeleke, the mentioned civil service heads in the local government, expressed their displeasure in the state government and NULGE leadership for allowing the strike to drag on without drastic efforts to halt it.
The Osun Workers Union, in a press statement signed on Tuesday by its organizing secretary, Comrade Gabriel Adeoye, said the senior staff's decision would restore sanity to local government administration which has been paralyzed since February.
According to Adeoye, "We learnt the meeting was called to discuss the frustration and disappoinment the strike action has caused the workers and smooth running of government business as well as to convey the critical information that worker's salaries might ceased to be paid if the strike continues because the continued absence of workers from their stations would make it difficult, if not impossible, for the local governments to access the local government allocation in CBN. It was noted that the state government could no longer sustain the payment of local government workers and teachers with the resources meant only for the state. "
Adeoye hinted that the senior civil servants told the Chief of Staff that Osun workers were no longer interested in the seemingly politically motivated strike action, adding that workers were ready to partner and work with any local government chairmen recognized by the federal government notwithstanding the reservation of the state government.
"Civil servants are supposed to be neutral and friends to any government in place, so the senior career officers in attendance stressed the importance of neutrality of civil service in political affairs, holding that since the APC-led chairmen have been recognized by the Federal Government through offices of the Attorney General of the Federation, Accountant General of the Federation, Central Bank of Nigeria and other key offices responsible for disbursement of federal allocation, it is sensible the workers acknowledge them as the duly recognized political heads in the local governments so that the allocation could be accessed for the betterment of the good people of Osun State.
"It is unheard of that civil servants, like NULGE in this instance, would make itself the mouthpiece of a political party against another political party, rushing from one court to another to stop payment of federal allocation to APC-led chairmen. What is the interest of local government workers in which political party is in charge in the local government? Our own is to work and get paid promptly. Whether APC or PDP, anyone who has access to federal allocation or is recognized by Court or the Federal Government is who we should collaborate with. Let the politicians deal with themselves the best way they deem fit. We should not allow ourselves to be the pawns in the chess game of the politicians. We should not be casualties of those selfish union leaders who are feeding fat during the strike while ordinary workers can't access their cooperative and other entitlements and supports ," Adeoye admonished.
The Osun Workers Union (OWU) stated that despite being informed that the leadership of Osun NULGE was invited to the meeting, the Ogungbangbe-led team was absent. As a result, a new invitation has been extended for another meeting scheduled for Thursday.
