Dr Oni Gbolabo in a writing style characterized in Nigerian English, with a mix of formal and informal language, and humorous references to culture and context passes Social Commentary style on societal values, particularly the way "achievers" are perceived and celebrated in Ijeshaland. In his opinion forwarded to KAKAKIOODUA as an Editorial Writing he expresses his perspective on what constitutes true achievement and development as he highlights the disparity between personal wealth and community impact. The text also praises Asiwaju Fasuyi for his selfless contributions to Ijeshaland concluding with a Call to Action as he urges readers to support positive change and development in Ijeshaland.
The story praises Asiwaju Fasuyi as a selfless achiever who prioritizes communal development over personal gain. He's credited with breaking barriers in Ijesha land, bringing people together, and driving positive change without seeking personal benefits. The writer urges others to support him and like-minded individuals, emphasizing unity and collective progress.

Society is a cocktail of people. The lettered and the unlettered, the rational and the obtuse, the benevolent and the malevolent. The socially inclined and the anti-social, the refined and the crude, the objective and subjective minds, the honest and the dubious, the frustrated, pessimists and the optimists, men of rectitude and the scallywags, the retrogressive and the progressives. We all formed the mix.
Outstanding and unique among the component groups is a complex and isolated group called the ‘achievers’. A group very complex in definition because of the unstable nature of the people in that group. Extremely difficult to define because who are no longer in the group will not admit until they are informed that they are dwelling on lost glory. Achievers’ group is very deceptive, fluidic, amoebic and always in flux.
To become a member of ‘achievers’ group you don’t need definition of existence, life purpose or intelligence. Those attributes are not prerequisites. All you present are material realities: the houses you built, the cash in banks, fleet of cars, chieftaincy titles, trips to the USA and UK and ability to discuss your lifetime accomplishments to spite the have-nots.
At times, members must have ‘connection’ to deal with the poor ones in their communities. Having several wives and children enhance members’ chances. Automatically, you become a ‘champion’ among the ‘achievers’ group if notable musician wax a record for you. To be honest, those are the people who brag in Ijesha land as achievers. Nothing like community impacts, just themselves and their egos, still they want people to hail them as ‘big men‘ and clapping for them with one hand,
Remember a public nuisance can belong to the group as far as he has the material requirements, although their impacts in the community always demarcate and set limits. The member of that group must not be criticized especially if you are poor even with superior intellectual endowment. Only few people can criticize them, among the few who can dare to criticize them is a carefree simpleton called Oni Gbolabo and wants to do it now. Kindly read further.
By providence, fate, education, experience and exposure few people among the self-tagged ‘achievers’ are real/actual achievers. Those real achievers are “personae extraordinaria” as the Spanish will call them. The few that excel from the pool of the so called ‘achievers’ are the ones who create a world different from the ‘common’ achievers. I mean creating the world beyond personal material attainment. The ones whose definition of existence transcends edification of gloating ego. The few ones who believe that the extension of their personal achievement is to impact on their communities and humanity.
They are the “primus inter peres”, I mean those who dare to be different from them all (in positive record). Please do not get me wrong, everyone is at the liberty to choose how he or she will administer personal fortunes, however, learn to bear the consequences of your choice. Let those who choose to impact on their community enjoy the accolades shower on them without forming gang to discredit them.
Ijesha land has never lacked achievers at any point in history, what we often lacked are real and actual achievers who transcend beyond personal achievement to attain communal development. Asiwaju Fasuyi, the real and actual achievers broke the barrier and still breaking it as a personal achiever who conceives communal development and always impacts on humanity. Please he is not the only real achievers in Ijesha land, mind you. My fancy for him is borne out of the purity of his thoughts as all he facilitated in Ijesha land will not and cannot benefit any of his immediate family or children. So what has he to gain personally in all the strides? Just love for homeland and humanity.
As a member of a given community, it is either you are part of the solution or part of the problem. Human being is fixed to obey the existing order but in the philosophy of development, conformity is just an extreme case of obedience, it does not lead to development. In the word of J. Frank Dobie (1888-1964) in his work titled Voice of the Coyote he said “conform and be dull”. No society develops until someone changes the pattern of conventional order as Asiwaju Yinka Fasuyi is doing. It is either you are part of it or against it.
According to John Donne, a metaphysical poet, he asked a fundamental question in one of his poems titled Songs and Sonnets and the question is “…where are the past years?” Where are the past achievers in Ijesha land? What did they do for Ijesha land? What are their legacies? What are the landmarks left behind? Some died and their glory perish with them.
Which change did they bring with their material wealth and the positions held? Some even caused problems that still haunts their children. Ilesha is filled with empty houses wasting away due to unending court cases between ‘Iyaale and Iyawos”. Is that their impact? If not, why can’t we support positive minds that bring development? If his style is not liked form another platform, all we need is development.
Let us forget the size of Asiwaju’s agbada and his signature fila but focus on the substance within and his ability to assemble people of means and substance. His birthday showed me that you can assemble men of rectitude and value without political noise, and he did. All politicians that attended came in their personal right not through political logo. I love that.
Let us close ranks and solicit for economic development in Ijesha land. I feel sad anytime trailers loaded with scrap iron are passing through Ijesha land to another state. Why can’t Ijesha meet to discuss how we can revive Adeniran Steel and Wire Limited (ASWIL). Many factories died in Ijesha land without traces, why? Ile-Ani, Ogbedu Plastics, Summit Oil and other, why cant we revive sum?
If you buy food in any Ilesha eateries today they will charge you N300 for ordinary take-away plastic because of transportation cost from Ibadan to Ilesha. Why can’t we have a plastic industry to produce small objects like that in Ilesha? Imagine Oyo manufacturing what Ijesha cannot manufacture…just looking for Oyo people’s trouble.
Let Ijesha stick together and support Asiwaju Fasuyi and like minds. According to Joe Namath, a footballer, who said “when you win, nothing hurts”. Let us win together and nothing will hurt us. International Brewery is the glory of Ijesha land today. If Dr. Lawrence Omole and co. did not dare it I don’t know what could have happened to me without trophy lager “otin oniyan”.
As at today, a room around Ilesha University, no matter how dirty goes for N200, 000 to N500, 000 because of the influx of university students. It is extremely exploitative, unpatriotic and hostile. It is giving Ilesha a bad image. Why can’t people invest in students’ hostel?
I challenge Asiwaju Fasuyi, Esan, Folusho Okunmadewa, Lufadeju, Lateef Bakare, Baba Faniyi (Rest Park), Sunday Omole (PalmDale Estate), Arimoro (AryHill), Folabi and Tony Igbaroola, Tola Adeogba, Yemi Oguntominiyi, Remi Oyeyemi, Engr. Segun Olatunji, Oshobukola, Ayo Turton, Dele Ibironke etc. to have land concession and invest on 200 room hostel. I, Oni Gbolabo has N12,000 in two banks and I can invest all as well.
My respects to all who contributed to make the following projects achievable: Owa’s palace, Geriatric Hospital, Ilesha University and I won’t forget Sarumi (Saro) for his contribution to Ijesha land, likewise Lateef Bakare (Ajirowa), Mama Yinka Oba, Mama Modupe Ajayi, Chief Akinola the Sawe, the Baba whose house I drink non-alcoholic trophy every December. So also people too numerous to mention and the people working to improve Wesley Guild Hospital.
Ijesha has always been the first we shall not be the last, according to Lew Grade (1906-1998) who said “…coming second is the same as coming last”. We are the head and will not be the tail. As the title of one of Kwesi Brew’s book says Lest We should be the Last. If care is not taken we may be at the rear, I pray it won’t happen.
Does that mean Asiwaju Fasuyi is a perfect man? No sir, he is not perfect. He is yet to pay me the N2 million I spent to arrest rain all through his birthday period, if not when next he is celebrating 75th birthday I will unleash rain, even if he hires event hall it will still rain inside the hall.
I thank all Ijeshas home and abroad for their anticipated understanding of my perspective, all is to make Ilesha a place of pride. My profound appreciation to all donors who had being sustaining Wit and Will Foundation for the Physically Challenged Children (WWFO) to achieve the landmark success, we thank you all.
Yours Publicly,
Dr. Oni Gbolabo
