‎‎Nigeria Loses a Treasure: Segun Awolowo, Grandson of Awo, Passes Away






‎Olusegun Awolowo, the grandson of Nigeria's first Western Region Premier, Obafemi Awolowo, has passed away at the age of 62. The Awolowo family announced his death in a statement issued on Thursday, describing him as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who dedicated his life to serving Nigeria.



‎According to the statement, Segun Awolowo was a "painfully loyal servant to Nigeria" who served as the Executive Director and CEO of the Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC) from 2013 to 2022. He was also unanimously elected president of the National Trade Promotion Organisations (TPOs) from ECOWAS member states in July 2021 and was appointed secretary of the national action committee on the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) in 2023.



‎President Bola Tinubu has expressed his condolences, describing Segun Awolowo's death as "unfortunate and a tragic loss" not only to the Awolowo family but also to the entire country. The President noted that Segun Awolowo exemplified the Awolowo pedigree in appearance, character, and demeanor, and made significant contributions to Nigeria.



‎The cause of Segun Awolowo's death has not been disclosed.
