APC Urges IGP to Declare Ede Political ‘Black Spot’ After Clash Involving Police, Party Members

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State has called on the Nigeria Police Force to designate Ede town as a political “black spot” ahead of the 2026 governorship election, following a violent confrontation involving police officers and suspected political thugs on Thursday.

In a press statement issued on March 13, 2026, the party’s Director of Media and Information, Mogaji Kola Olabisi, alleged that youths believed to be supporters of the Accord Party attacked police officers and members of the APC during an incident in Ede, the hometown of the Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke.

According to the APC, video clips from the scene showed some individuals obstructing police officers from performing their duties while security personnel attempted to disperse the crowd with tear gas. The party claimed that some of the alleged attackers reportedly threw unexploded tear gas canisters back at the police and attempted to confront officers at the scene.

The party described the development as a “dangerous dimension to politics,” urging the Inspector-General of Police to give the town special security attention ahead of the governorship poll to prevent further violence.

The APC also called on the police to thoroughly review video footage of the incident to identify and prosecute those responsible for the disruption of public peace and attacks on security personnel.

The party commended the police for what it described as a professional handling of the situation, noting that no officer reportedly lost their life during the confrontation.

The statement further questioned the obstruction of the reinstated chairman of Ede North Local Government, Hon. Adeyemi Elliot, who the APC said was attempting to perform official duties at the time of the incident.

The party referenced the February 10, 2025 judgment of the Court of Appeal of Nigeria which it said reinstated APC local government executives across the state, adding that the ruling remains valid.

While urging the state government to respect the rule of law, the APC also commended its members and supporters for maintaining what it described as a peaceful and restrained posture during the confrontation.

The party insisted that heightened security presence in Ede would help prevent political violence and ensure a peaceful electoral process in the 2026 Osun governorship election.
