Fire Razes Plank Shops at Ilesa Sawmill, Traders Count Losses

A section of the Omi-Asoro Sawmill along Breweries Expressway in Ilesa has been gutted by fire, destroying four plank shops and goods worth millions of naira.

Eyewitnesses said the inferno, which broke out under unclear circumstances, completely razed the affected shops before it was brought under control.

One of the victims, Mrs. Eniola Olowoyeye, who spoke with a correspondent of Radio Nigeria, said the cause of the fire could not be determined. She noted that the entire sawmill had long been disconnected from public electricity due to poor power supply in the area.

Mrs. Olowoyeye explained that the fire was eventually contained through the combined efforts of officials of the Federal Fire Service and sympathizers, preventing it from spreading to other parts of the sawmill. She added that a nearby security guard first raised the alarm after noticing the fire, prompting swift response from shop owners and residents.

Another affected trader, Mr. Olasunkanmi Olowoyo, appealed to the Osun State Government and well-meaning individuals for assistance, estimating the total value of goods lost in the fire at about ₦60 million.

He disclosed that a customer had paid approximately ₦18 million for roofing planks just a day before the incident and was scheduled to collect the goods, only to learn they had been destroyed in the fire.

Mr. Olowoyo stressed that government intervention would be crucial in helping victims recover from the devastating losses.
