History Repeats as Owa Haastrup Crowns New Akire of Ikire

IKIRE, OSUN STATE — March 28, 2026

History echoed in Ikire on Saturday as the Owa Clement Adesuyi Haastrup, Paramount Ruler of Ijesaland, once again performed the crowning rites of a new Akire of Ikire, Osun state.

The traditional ruler presided over the installation and decoration of Oba Tajudeen Olanrewaju, who ascended the throne following the death of Oba Olatunde Falabi on February 27, 2026.

The ceremony, rich in symbolism and continuity, marked a rare moment where the same royal figure who once crowned a past Akire—during his time deputising for former Osun State governor Isiaka Adeleke—returned to perform the sacred duty yet again, reinforcing a sense of historical cycle in Ikire’s traditional institution.

At the official presentation of the staff of office, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke called on the new monarch to prioritise unity among his subjects as a pathway to sustainable development.

The governor noted that Oba Olanrewaju’s emergence followed years of litigation and communal tension, which had earlier been addressed during the administration of former governor Gboyega Oyetola.

“I have done the right thing for the people of Ikire,” Adeleke stated, while congratulating the monarch and members of the Osun State Council of Obas present at the ceremony.

In his response, Oba Olanrewaju expressed appreciation to the state government for ensuring peace and stability in Ikireland, pledging to uphold unity and work for the continued progress of the town and the state.

The event was attended by prominent traditional rulers, including the Orangun of Oke-Ila, the Alademure of Ibokun, and Olori Iwayemi Haastrup, alongside chiefs and dignitaries from across the state.

For many observers, the crowning ceremony was more than a royal transition—it was a powerful reminder of history repeating itself, binding past and present in the enduring traditions of Ikire.
