Nigeria and the global football community have been thrown into mourning following the death of legendary football coach and respected Modakeke High Chief, Festus Adegboye Onigbinde.
Family sources confirmed that the revered tactician, who also held the traditional title of Otun Balogun of Modakeke, passed away peacefully on Tuesday. His death marks the end of a remarkable era in Nigerian football and community leadership.
Onigbinde etched his name in history as the first indigenous Nigerian to coach the Nigeria national football team. Renowned for his tactical discipline and passion for developing homegrown talent, he played a pivotal role in shaping the evolution of football in Nigeria and mentoring generations of players and coaches.
Throughout his illustrious career, the football icon earned widespread respect within Nigeria and internationally for his contributions to the development of the sport.
Beyond football, Onigbinde was a prominent traditional leader in Modakeke, where he served as the Otun Balogun. He was also known as a devoted family man — a husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend — whose life was marked by service to both community and country.
In a statement released on behalf of the family and obtained by Inside Modakeke, Mrs. Bolade Adesuyi expressed gratitude to God for the impactful life he lived.
“We thank God for a life well spent and for his immense contributions to the Nigerian nation and the world as an exceptional football coach,” the statement read.
The family also prayed for the peaceful repose of his soul and appreciated the support and prayers of well-wishers at this difficult time.
Details of the funeral arrangements, according to the family, will be announced in due course.
