The Oyo State Government has dismissed viral reports claiming that teachers and students abducted during last Friday’s attack on three schools in Oriire Local Government Area have been released.
Abayomi Fagbenro, the Special Adviser on Security to Governor Seyi Makinde, described the reports circulating on social media as false.
Speaking on Thursday morning, Fagbenro stated that as of 10:35 a.m., there had been no release of the victims kidnapped during the attack in the Ahoro-Esinle/Yawota axis of Ogbomoso.
The attack, which targeted Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Yawota; Community Grammar School; and LEA Primary School, Esiele, reportedly left at least two persons dead, while about 30 teachers and students were abducted.
Since Wednesday night, several social media posts had claimed that the victims regained freedom, while others questioned the authenticity of the reports due to the absence of confirmation from major media outlets.
Reacting to the development, the Oyo State Police Public Relations Officer, Olayinka Ayanlade, also said he was unaware of any release as of Wednesday midnight. He, however, assured that security agencies were intensifying efforts to rescue the victims safely.
Following the incident, the Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, deployed additional detectives from the Force Headquarters in Abuja to support ongoing rescue operations.
The Defence Headquarters had earlier disclosed that troops made contact with the abductors and were working towards the safe rescue of the kidnapped students and teachers.
Meanwhile, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, called for a “careful, clinical and timely” rescue operation.
Governor Makinde earlier revealed that seven students were abducted from Community Grammar School, while 18 pupils and seven teachers were kidnapped from First Baptist Primary and Nursery School during the coordinated attacks. He also confirmed that one person was killed in the incident.
