‎Ilesa East LG Chairman Alleges Plot to Forcefully Take Over Secretariat, Calls for Security Intervention

‎The Executive Chairman of Ilesa East Local Government, Hon. Ibrahim Olanrewaju Balogun, has raised concerns over an alleged plot by some opposition figures to forcefully take over the local government secretariat, warning that such action could threaten peace and democratic governance in the council area.

‎Speaking at the weekend, Balogun alleged that intelligence reports available to him indicate plans by certain individuals to invade the local government secretariat on Monday and disrupt the activities of the administration.

‎The chairman described the alleged move as a direct assault on democratic principles and the rule of law, stressing that any attempt to seize government facilities through unlawful means would undermine constitutional governance and public order.

‎According to him, the individuals allegedly involved are believed to be loyal to Mr. Alaba Popoola, whom he identified as the vice chairman of the local government under the Accord/PDP coalition and the coalition's candidate for the House of Representatives seat in Ijesa South Federal Constituency.

‎Balogun further alleged that, beyond the planned takeover of the secretariat, the residences of several prominent leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the area, including his own home, have reportedly been identified as potential targets for attack.

‎The council chairman claimed to be in possession of a recorded voice note which he believes contains evidence of the alleged plot. He called on security agencies to urgently investigate the matter and take proactive steps to prevent any breakdown of law and order in the local government area.

‎"The reported move to forcefully take over the secretariat is unacceptable and contrary to the principles of constitutional democracy," Balogun said.

‎He described the alleged plan as "a rape of the rule of law and democracy," emphasizing that political disagreements should be resolved through lawful and democratic processes rather than intimidation, violence, or acts capable of disrupting public peace.

‎The chairman also appealed to residents, political stakeholders, and supporters of all political parties to remain calm, peaceful, and law-abiding, assuring them that the local government administration remains committed to delivering quality governance and protecting democratic values.

‎He warned individuals and groups against taking the law into their own hands, stressing that government institutions must be respected and allowed to function without undue interference.

‎As of the time of filing this report, there had been no official response from Mr. Alaba Popoola or representatives of the Accord/PDP coalition regarding the allegations.

‎Security agencies have also yet to issue a statement on the matter.
