The Osun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has raised concerns over what it described as a resurgence of politically motivated violence in Ilesa, alleging that four of its members were killed within the last three days by suspected thugs linked to the Accord Party.
The party, in a statement issued on Thursday by its Director of Media and Information, Mogaji Kola Olabisi, called on the Inspector-General of Police to order a thorough investigation into the incidents and ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice.
According to the statement, the Chairman of Ilesa-West Local Government Area, Hon. Olabode Oluwasegun, popularly known as "Shigopapa," alleged that he narrowly escaped an attack on his residence earlier this week.
Oluwasegun claimed that a group of armed men stormed his residence in Ilesa late Tuesday night, banging on his gate, calling out his name, and firing gunshots into the air. He said the attackers were unable to gain access to the compound before eventually leaving the area.
The council chairman further alleged that the attackers were affiliated with the Accord Party and were linked to some political figures in the state. He disclosed that the incident had been reported to both the Ayeso Police Division and Akad Police Division in Ilesa.
He also alleged that four APC members had been killed in separate attacks within the last three days. The deceased were identified as Abiola Michael, popularly known as "Tested," Ojo Elesin, and Idowu, also known as "Huncho," while details of the fourth victim were not immediately provided.
According to him, the attacks followed earlier warnings by the APC that political thugs had allegedly been mobilized from neighbouring states to target members and supporters of the party in Ijesaland.
The APC condemned the killings and described them as a threat to democratic participation and political freedom in the state.
The opposition party also drew parallels between the recent incidents and the violence that preceded the 2022 elections, alleging that several of its members were killed during that period.
The party urged security agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services (DSS), to take urgent steps to investigate the allegations, prevent further attacks, and safeguard lives and property across the state.
As of the time of filing this report, the Accord Party and the individuals named in the allegations had not publicly responded to the claims.
The police authorities have also not issued an official statement regarding the allegations or the reported killings.
