The founder of College of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Technology (CAFFTECH), Ijeda-Ijesa, Oriade local government, Osun State and the President of National Fish Association of Nigeria, Otunba Gabriel Emiola Ogunsanya has advocated for the best practices in fisheries with the focus on using it as an important part of the response to food security.
In a chat with KAKAKIOODUA on his Ijeda-Ijesa farm on Friday, Otunba Ogunsanya declared that food security has become everybody’s problem and begs for national policies.
"Continuous supply of fish requires good management of the fisheries and proper institutional set-ups.
"Nigeria can export fish from producing tilapia and carp seeds using committed and expert officials and integrated breeders or institutions who have invested in the process.
"These seeds can then be collected by the government and introduced into the water bodies throughout the country and within a year there will more than enough and we can export.
"A national policy involving a fishing law will also help to avoid cropping before maturity. A law should be promulgated in such that Tilapia and carp fishes of certain small sizes should not be caught. Fishermen should not use small nets." He professed
