A tense standoff occurred in Ilesa, Osun State, between a group of area boys and Federal Mobile Highway Police, leaving the would-be extortionists lucky to escape unharmed.
According to eyewitnesses, the area boys had gathered to demand money from the contractor handling the repair of the Ilesa-Akure dual carriageway road. However, they were met with resistance from the Federal Mobile Highway Police, who were deployed to secure the site.
A police officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity, warned the area boys that they would be treated as highway robbers if they continued to disturb the workers. The officer further stated that the police were prepared to use live bullets to disperse the group if necessary.
The area boys, who had apparently been attempting to extort money from the contractor, were forced to retreat empty-handed, narrowly escaping arrest and possible prosecution.
The incident highlights the growing concern over insecurity and extortion attempts on construction sites and highways in Nigeria. The Federal Mobile Highway Police have vowed to maintain a strong presence on the roads and protect workers and infrastructure projects from such activities.
