Hopes for Students as University of Ilesa Addresses Student Accommodation Crisis...Unveils Accommodation Plan

The University of Ilesa, Osun State, has released a statement addressing the pressing issue of student accommodation. The institution acknowledges the challenge, citing that the demand for on-campus residence far exceeds supply, with only 294 bed spaces available following recent renovations.

According to the statement, the university is taking steps to provide more hostels on campus, including:

- A N750m TETFUND intervention for hostel development, with construction ongoing

- Public-Private Partnership (PPP) construction of student hostels on a Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) basis

- Donation of hostels by a family, currently under construction

- A N3bn investment proposal from an investor, also on a BOT basis

The university is also working to ensure adequate hostel management and maintenance, with significant funding allocated for utilities, security, cleaning, and medical services.

In a bid to tackle accommodation challenges and ensure student safety, the university is collaborating with local communities, landlords, and security agencies. Discussions with student representatives have also yielded positive results.

University Registrar, Funso Ojo, reiterated the institution's commitment to providing a comfortable and excellent academic experience for students.

UNIVERSITY OF ILESA, ILESA, OSUN STATE

PRESS RELEASE

 ISSUE OF STUDENT ACCOMMODATION

The Governing Council and Management of the University of Ilesa, Ilesa, Osun State are addressing the pressing issue of student accommodation.

Historically, the former Osun State College of Education, Ilesa which was upgraded to a University status lacked on-campus hostels for its 47 years of her existence, with students residing in neighboring communities.

When the University took-off in April 2023, regulatory bodies for certain academic programmes mandated on-campus hostels for students. We therefore renovated and converted some buildings to student hostels thereby creating just 294 bed spaces, but demand for on-campus residence far exceeds supply.

EFFORTS TO PROVIDE MORE HOSTELS ON CAMPUS:

The following efforts are being made to provide more accommodation for students on campus:

1.  TETFUND's N750m Special intervention for hostel development (construction ongoing).

2.  Public-Private Partnership (PPP) construction of student hostels on Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT).

3.  Donation of hostels by a family (under construction).

4.  N3bn investment proposal from an investor (BOT basis).

We are hopeful that as these efforts bear fruit, more students will secure on-campus accommodation.

HOSTEL MANAGEMENT AND MAINTENANCE:

Managing hostels is complex and costly, requiring significant funding for utilities, security, cleaning, maintenance, and staff salaries.

The University ensures its student hostels have adequate water supply, uninterrupted power through PHCN, standby generators, and solar-powered energy solutions.

Significant funds are also allocated for regular cleaning, fumigation, 24/7 security and fencing, medical services, and more.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT AND SECURITY:

The University is collaborating with local communities, landlords, and security agencies to tackle accommodation challenges and ensure students' safety both on and off campus.

Discussions with student representatives have also yielded amicable resolutions on the issue of welfare of the students.

The University Management will continue to ensure that students have a comfortable and excellent academic experience in the University.
