The Nigerian Presidency has dismissed recent US allegations of genocide against Christians and Nigeria's designation as a "Country of Particular Concern" (CPC), stating that the claims misrepresent the country's security challenges.
The Presidency highlighted progress in counter-terrorism operations since 2023, including arrests, convictions, and a reduction in terror-related casualties. It attributed Nigeria's security issues to terrorism, banditry, and communal clashes, rather than religious persecution, noting that victims come from all faiths and regions.
The statement reaffirmed President Bola Tinubu's commitment to national security, citing improved coordination among security forces and intelligence agencies, and highlighted key measures to address insecurity, including:
- Conviction of over 124 terrorists since 2024
- Joint security task forces and regional border patrols
- Permanent operations in high-risk areas
- Enhanced victim compensation programmes
- Intelligence sharing with international allies
The government reported an 81% reduction in terror-related deaths since 2015 and the neutralization of over 13,000 terrorists in the past year.
