The All Progressives Congress has approved a six-month extension for caretaker executives managing the party’s structures in Ekiti and Osun states.
The decision was reached at the party’s 8th National Convention held on Friday, effectively postponing fresh congresses in the two states. Party leaders said the move was necessary to prevent disruptions during a politically sensitive period.
Presenting the motion, Barau Jibrin noted that the tenure of caretaker committees at ward, local government, and state levels was due to expire at the end of March 2026. He, however, stressed that the timing was not ideal for conducting internal elections.
“It is expedient in the overall interest of the party to extend the tenures of the caretaker committees to allow for proper coordination, consolidation, and preparation for the conduct of the congresses,” he said.
The motion was seconded by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele and received unanimous approval from convention delegates.
In a related development, the convention also dissolved the party’s National Working Committee (NWC), clearing the way for the emergence of a new national leadership.
The dissolution motion was moved by the party’s National Legal Adviser, Abdulkarim Kana, in line with provisions of the party’s constitution, and seconded by Deputy National Secretary Abdulkarim Oluopolekana.
Meanwhile, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, called on delegates to adopt the consensus method in electing new officials, describing it as a way to ensure a smooth and unified transition.
The resolutions form part of broader efforts by the ruling party to strengthen internal structures ahead of future political engagements.
