Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has been granted temporary bail from the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).
The development is to allow him attend the funeral rites of his mother, Hajiya Umma El-Rufai, who died in Cairo on Friday, March 27.
His son, Bashir El-Rufai, confirmed the development in a post shared via his X (formerly Twitter) handle, stating that his father had been released from detention.
In the post, Bashir described the detention as unlawful and expressed appreciation to supporters, noting that the family remained resilient through the period.
El-Rufai had been in ICPC custody since February 18 over allegations bordering on financial misconduct and related offences. He spent over a month with the commission before being arraigned earlier this week before the Kaduna Division of the Federal High Court.
The former governor was arraigned alongside one Joel Adoga on charges involving alleged conversion and possession of public property, as well as money laundering. He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge linked to deposits into domiciliary accounts and the handling of earnings.
The court had adjourned ruling on his bail application to March 31, 2026, prior to the latest development granting him temporary release.
