The Osun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has expressed sympathy with victims of the rainstorm that struck Osogbo, the state capital, on Saturday, leaving several people injured, properties destroyed, and casualties reported.
In a statement issued on Sunday by its Director of Media and Information, Mogaji Kola Olabisi, the opposition party described the incident as tragic, while attributing the scale of destruction partly to what it called substandard projects executed by the administration of Governor Ademola Adeleke.
The party noted that although the rainstorm was a natural occurrence, the extent of the damage was worsened by what it alleged to be poor construction standards and inadequate oversight by the state government.
According to the APC, several roads reportedly constructed by the current administration were damaged by the storm, while some solar streetlights allegedly collapsed under its impact.
The statement also raised concerns over the proliferation of large political billboards across Osogbo, suggesting that some of them contributed to the destruction recorded during the storm. The party questioned the effectiveness of the state Signage Agency in regulating the erection and maintenance of such structures.
The APC further alleged that some of the affected billboards were linked to government agencies and political actors, calling for a review of regulatory practices to prevent future occurrences.
While commiserating with affected families, the party called for improved governance and proactive measures to mitigate the impact of natural disasters. It stressed the need for stricter enforcement of construction standards and better urban planning.
The opposition party also urged the state Signage Agency to overhaul its operations and carry out its responsibilities without bias, warning against any attempt to use the agency as a tool for political victimisation.
Reaffirming its political stance, the APC expressed confidence in its governorship candidate, Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji, ahead of the August 15, 2026 election, stating that he possesses the experience required to improve governance in the state.
The party concluded by reiterating its condolences to victims and calling for urgent steps to prevent avoidable losses in future natural disasters.
