The Osun State Police Command has intensified its ongoing crackdown on cultism and political violence, leading to the arrest of eight suspected notorious cultists and political thugs during coordinated operations in Ilesa and Osogbo.
The suspects, identified as Abiola Osobu Michael (30), popularly known as “Small”; Afolabi Samson (29), alias “Elesi”; Ojute Imoleayo (28); Jimoh Olayinka (48); Olwasesin Niyi (40); Robin Akeem (19); Robin Selim (19); and Nurudeen Kafayat (39), were apprehended by operatives of the Command’s Anti-Cultism Unit following credible intelligence.
Items recovered from the suspects include an axe, a live cartridge, a blue cap bearing the insignia of the Eiye confraternity, and six other face caps believed to be linked to cult activities.
According to police sources, the first arrest was made on June 17, 2026, at about 6:00 p.m. in the Iloro community of Ilesa, where Abiola Osobu Michael was allegedly terrorising residents. He was promptly arrested and reportedly confessed during interrogation to being a member of the Eiye confraternity.
In a related operation carried out in the early hours of June 19, 2026, at about 1:00 a.m., police operatives responded to reports of suspected cultists causing unrest in the Sasa area of Osogbo. Acting on the intelligence, the team swiftly mobilised to the scene and arrested the remaining suspects, while several others reportedly escaped.
The Command disclosed that efforts are ongoing to track down and apprehend the fleeing suspects. It added that those currently in custody would be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
Reacting to the development, the Commissioner of Police in Osun State, CP Ibrahim Gotan, reiterated the Command’s commitment to combating cultism and violent crimes across the state.
He urged parents and guardians to closely monitor their children and wards, warning against involvement in cult-related activities. The police chief also advised young people to channel their energies into productive ventures and lawful pursuits.
The latest arrests underscore the Command’s determination to rid Osun State of cultism, criminal gangs, and political violence, while ensuring the safety and security of residents.
