The Osun State Police Command has arrested three suspects over an alleged attempt to attack the Director-General of the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship campaign, Hon. Oluwole Oke.
The Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Gotan, disclosed this during a press briefing on Thursday, saying the arrests were part of the command's ongoing efforts to tackle cultism, political thuggery and other violent crimes ahead of the August 15 governorship election.
According to the police, the incident happened on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, after Oke and other APC members paid a courtesy visit to the Ajalaye of Ipetu-Ijesa, Oba Dr. Agunbiade Oke. The delegation later moved to the town hall, where they held a meeting with party members.
The police said that shortly after the meeting, a group of suspected political thugs, believed to be members of the Eiye confraternity, allegedly blocked the exit route of the APC convoy.
According to the command, one of the suspects, 24-year-old Olamilekan Oriyomi, allegedly brought out a Beretta pistol loaded with four rounds of live ammunition and attempted to point it at Oke. However, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) at the scene quickly noticed the action, overpowered the suspect and prevented the alleged attack.
Police officers providing security at the venue immediately arrested Oriyomi and recovered the pistol and four live rounds of ammunition. Other suspects reportedly fled the scene.
The command said further intelligence-led operations by its Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) led to the arrest of two additional suspects on July 1, 2026. They were identified as Ayotunde Ikupolati Ojo, 44, and Fakinleye Femi, 31.
Police said Oriyomi confessed during interrogation that he obtained the firearm from one Busuyi Akinwole Ikupolati, also known as "Omo-Akin," who is currently on the run. Investigators also said the suspect made statements implicating some influential individuals, who are now under investigation.
The Commissioner of Police assured residents that efforts are ongoing to arrest all fleeing suspects and bring everyone connected with the incident to justice.
Gotan reaffirmed the command's commitment to ensuring peace and security before, during and after the governorship election, warning that anyone involved in political violence or other criminal activities would face the full weight of the law.
He also urged residents to remain calm, obey the law and continue to provide useful information that would help security agencies maintain peace across Osun State.
