Ribadu Heads Nigerian Delegation in Historic US‑Nigeria Security Pact as President Tinubu Constitutes Nigerian Team for Joint Working Group on Security






President Bola Tinubu has formally approved the Nigerian side of the US‑Nigeria Joint Working Group, a bilateral mechanism aimed at strengthening cooperation to tackle the country’s escalating security challenges.


The working group was agreed during a recent high‑level visit to Washington, D.C., led by National Security Adviser Mallam Nuhu Ribadu  ¹ ². Ribadu will chair the Nigerian delegation, which is supported by a multi‑stakeholder team drawn from key ministries and security agencies.


Members of the Nigerian delegation include:


- Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar – Minister of Foreign Affairs

- Mohammed Badaru Abubakar – Minister of Defence

- Hon. Olubunmi Tunji‑Ojo – Minister of Interior

- Dr Bernard M. Doro – Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation

- Gen. Olufemi Oluyede – Chief of Defence Staff

- Ambassador Mohammed Mohammed – Director‑General, National Intelligence Agency

- Mr Kayode Egbetokun – Inspector‑General of Police.


The secretariat of the working group will be run by Ms Idayat Hassan of the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) and Mr Paul Alabi of the Nigerian Embassy in Washington.


In a statement released by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Tinubu urged the members to “work assiduously with their US counterparts to ensure smooth operationalisation of all agreements across sectors”.

The Joint Working Group is expected to fast‑track collaboration on defence, intelligence sharing, counter‑terrorism, policing, and humanitarian coordination, reflecting a broader effort to deepen strategic ties between Nigeria and the United States.


The announcement follows a series of high‑level engagements in Washington where the Nigerian delegation, led by Ribadu, met with senior US officials, including the State Department, National Security Council and the Department of Defense.
