ADC State Congresses Stalled Amid Court Orders, Internal Crisis

The planned state congresses of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), scheduled for Saturday, April 11, 2026, have been disrupted across several states due to legal battles and internal disagreements within the party.

While some state chapters have officially suspended their congresses, others remain uncertain, with a few indicating readiness to proceed ahead of the party’s national convention.

In Adamawa State, the situation took a dramatic turn as a Yola High Court ordered a halt to the planned congresses following the protracted crisis rocking the state chapter. Presiding judge, Ahmed Isa, directed that the exercise be suspended pending the determination of a suit before the court. The matter has been adjourned to April 15, 2026, for further hearing.

Reacting to the development, the party’s North-East Vice Chairman and former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, denied knowledge of the court ruling, stating that he was not aware of the proceedings as he was in Abuja at the time.

In Anambra State, the ADC leadership also announced the suspension of its congresses. The state chairman, Patrick Obianyo, said the decision was taken in adherence to the rule of law and respect for judicial processes. He urged party members to remain calm and law-abiding, while warning the public against recognising individuals parading themselves as party leaders without proper authorisation.

Obianyo further emphasised that the tenure of the current state executive remains valid and recognised by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), adding that new dates for the congresses would be announced after ongoing consultations at the national level.

Similarly, the ADC chapter in Ondo State suspended its planned ward, local government, and state congresses. The decision, according to a statement by the state chairman, Wole Ademoyegun, followed INEC’s directive to maintain the status quo, reaffirming the party’s commitment to due process and institutional order.

In Zamfara State, uncertainty surrounds the exercise, as the state chairman, Kabiru Garba, disclosed that there has been no official communication or preparation regarding the congresses.

Meanwhile, the party in Niger State has also suspended its planned congresses across all 25 local government areas. State chairman Musa Hassan said the move was necessary to uphold the rule of law and respect judicial authority.

The developments highlight growing tensions within the ADC, raising concerns over the party’s readiness for its forthcoming national convention.
