The maiden edition of the Ijesa Tech Prize 2026 has entered its next stage following the successful completion of the written technology examination, with 20 secondary schools emerging as finalists for the Oral Tech Quiz Competition.
Organised by the Ijesa Digital Hub under the Ijesa Digital Citizenship Programme, the competition attracted 65 secondary schools drawn from the five local government areas of Ijesaland, underscoring the growing interest in science, technology, innovation and digital education among young people in the region.
According to the organisers, students demonstrated impressive knowledge and aptitude during the written examination, which served as the qualifying stage for the competition. After a rigorous assessment process, the top four schools from each local government area secured places in the next round, bringing the total number of finalists to 20.
The Oral Tech Quiz Competition is scheduled to hold on Friday, July 3, 2026, at the Ijesa Digital Hub, Olashore International School, Iloko-Ijesa, beginning at 10:00 a.m.
The event is expected to attract prominent personalities from within and outside Ijesaland, including Vice President of IGAD North America, Dr. Wale Alonge; Dr. Kayode Dada; Mr. James Ajayi; Chief Mrs. Dupe Ajayi-Gbadebo, Chief of Staff to His Imperial Majesty, alongside other distinguished community leaders, education stakeholders and technology enthusiasts.
Beyond being a competition, the Ijesa Tech Prize is designed to ignite students' interest in science, technology and innovation while promoting critical thinking, creativity and healthy academic competition. The initiative also seeks to expose young people to emerging technologies and prepare them for opportunities in the rapidly evolving digital economy.
The competition will culminate in the Ijesa Tech Prize Awards Ceremony on Friday, July 17, 2026, where outstanding students and schools will be recognised for their exceptional performances.
Winners will receive an array of prizes, including technology training scholarships, cash rewards for outstanding students, and school development grants for the overall first, second and third-place schools.
Speaking on the significance of the initiative, the organisers described the Ijesa Tech Prize as a strategic investment in the future of Ijesaland, aimed at identifying gifted young talents, nurturing their potential and creating pathways for them to become innovators, entrepreneurs and leaders in the digital age.
They reaffirmed the commitment of the Ijesa Digital Hub to building a thriving digital ecosystem that equips young people with the skills and opportunities needed to compete successfully in the 21st-century knowledge economy.
Members of the public, parents, educators, corporate organisations and the media have been invited to attend the Oral Tech Quiz Competition and celebrate the remarkable talents emerging from secondary schools across Ijesaland.
