Osun 2026: INEC Identifies 385 Flashpoints Ahead of August 15 Governorship Election

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has identified 385 flashpoints and about 200 hard-to-reach areas in Osun State ahead of the August 15, 2026, governorship election.

The Osun Resident Electoral Commissioner, Oluwatoyin Babalola, made this known during a security meeting held at the Police Command Headquarters in Osogbo. The meeting brought together top security officials, religious leaders, electoral officers, and members of the media.

Babalola said INEC has completed a risk assessment in all 30 local government areas of the state. She explained that the list of flashpoints and difficult locations has already been shared with security agencies to help them plan for the election.

She also said INEC has trained its staff on risk management and will continue to monitor the security situation before the election.

According to her, she visited 29 of the 30 local government areas, including Ila and Ifedayo, where there have been reports of kidnapping. She said security agencies assured the commission that they are working to keep the state peaceful before, during, and after the election.

Babalola also revealed that INEC has received about 75 percent of the materials needed for the election. She said non-sensitive materials have already been sent to the appropriate locations.

She called on security agencies to do more to assure residents that they can vote safely on election day.

"We are committed to conducting a free, fair, credible, inclusive, and transparent election," she said.

The governorship election will be held on August 15, 2026. The main candidates are Governor Ademola Adeleke of the Accord Party, who is seeking another term, Bola Oyebamiji of the All Progressives Congress (APC), and Dr. Najeem Salaam of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), who is backed by former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola.
