The week-long activities commemorating the 70th anniversary of Methodist High School, Ilesa continued in grand style on Day Three, featuring free medical checkups, a professional development session for teachers, motivational talks for students, and an engaging quiz competition.
Free Medical Checkups for Teachers and Students
As part of its commitment to the wellbeing of its community, the school organized free medical checkups for both teachers and students. The initiative was widely applauded as a thoughtful intervention aimed at promoting health awareness and early detection of medical conditions among members of the school community.
Professional Development Session for Teachers
The first segment of the day inside the School Hall focused on a Professional Development Session designed to equip teachers with contemporary skills and knowledge in line with evolving educational standards.
Dignitaries present at the session included Arc. Gbenga Akintola the National President of the alumni association, Chairman of the Planning Committee Mr. Wale Folowosele, PTA Chairman Alhaji Adebinpe, the Chairman of the Board of Governors, and the Tutor-General/Permanent Secretary, TESCOM Ijesa Zone, Mrs. Sharaibi V.O. Also in attendance were the Director of Quality Assurance, TESCOM Ijesa Zone, Mr. Adedeji; former principals Mr. Daramola V.O. and Mr. Idowu Felix Babafemi; heads of departments and units; and other members of staff. Notably present was Chief Mrs. Grace Oluwatoye of the 1969 set, alongside Mr. Femi Ojo, the event coordinator.
In his presentation, former Principal Mr. Daramola V.O. emphasized the need for teachers to continuously develop themselves. He urged educators to be confident and competent, noting that students’ performance is directly tied to the quality and dedication of their teachers.
Mrs. Sharaibi V.O., Tutor-General/PS TESCOM Ijesa Zone, in her address, highlighted the importance of adapting to curriculum changes and embracing emerging technologies, particularly in the era of Artificial Intelligence. She reminded teachers that their role goes beyond imparting knowledge to shaping the future of their students.
“Students don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care,” she stated, stressing that every student is unique and that teachers must understand individual learning differences. She also underscored the importance of preparing lesson notes and serving as role models.
Speaking further, TESCOM Director of Quality Assurance, Mr. Adedeji, charged teachers to uphold self-discipline, be time-conscious, maintain passion for teaching, and properly document their instructional plans.
Arc. Gbenga Akintola, National President commended the teachers for their dedication and resilience, encouraging them to continue striving for excellence.
Motivational Talks for Students
The second segment of the day featured motivational talks for SS3 students, aimed at guiding them toward success in life and their future careers.
The session was facilitated by Chief Mrs. Grace Oluwatoye, a retired consultant to the United Nations, who inspired the students with practical insights on goal-setting, discipline, and perseverance. She also made a presentation of books to the students to support their academic and personal development.
Also present at the session was Mr. Ojebode, Head of the Board of Trustees and Head of the Ibadan Chapter of the alumni association.
Quiz Competition
The day’s activities concluded with an exciting quiz competition. Four secondary schools converged for an intellectually stimulating quiz competition that tested students across five core academic subjects.
The competition featured participants from Methodist High School, African Church Grammar School, St. Margaret's Girls Secondary School, and St. Lawrence's Grammar School.
The quiz covered a broad range of subjects, including English Language, Mathematics, Civic Education, Literature in English, and Biology, reflecting the organisers’ commitment to promoting all-round academic excellence among students.
The atmosphere at the event was charged with excitement as contestants demonstrated remarkable knowledge, confidence, and teamwork while responding to challenging questions drawn from the various subject areas. Supporters and teachers cheered their respective schools, adding colour and enthusiasm to the academic contest.
Mrs. Adekoya served as the Quiz Master, skillfully moderating proceedings and ensuring that the competition maintained a high standard of fairness and professionalism. She was supported by Mrs. Awokola, who acted as the Time Keeper, diligently monitoring response times to ensure strict adherence to the rules. Mr. Fatunwase functioned as the Recorder, carefully documenting scores and maintaining accurate records throughout the competition.
The quiz competition not only provided a platform for intellectual engagement but also fostered healthy rivalry, collaboration, and academic motivation among the participating schools. Organisers expressed satisfaction with the level of participation and performance, noting that such initiatives play a crucial role in strengthening academic culture and encouraging students to strive for excellence.
Day Three of the 70th anniversary celebration of Methodist High School, Ilesa, not only celebrated the institution’s rich legacy but also reinforced its enduring commitment to academic excellence, teacher development, student motivation, and community wellbeing.
The anniversary celebration continues into its fourth day with a lineup of impactful programmes including a seminar for teachers, free medical check-ups, and inspirational talks for students focused on success in life and career development.
